Amelia Jackie debuts New single and video for “Velvet Leash” directed by Lessa Millet

Amelia Jackie premiers her new video for the single, “Velvet Leash,” today via Them. Magazine, where Cyrus Dunham wrote that when first hearing Amelia sing, “it was like someone was putting sound to feelings I didn’t know I had, or had buried so far down I’d convinced myself they weren’t there..” The Video was written and directed by Lessa Millet. The song was recorded and mixed by Robin MacMillan at his apartment in Brooklyn, and mastered by the illustrious Jade Payne. The single can also now be heard on Soundcloud and Bandcamp.

Velvet Leash offers a sumptuous banquet for the dispossessed, a glimpse into a world more desirable than the one we were sold. The velvet texture and molasses flow of Amelia Jackie’s voice, honest as the blues, anchors us throughout a black lace and gem-tone saturated feast lovingly prepared to indulge those accustomed to being outside-looking-in. The result is a defiantly warm anthem for the ones richer than the rich girls in everything but money, a realm where the heartsick longing of the placeless is transmuted into something more satiating than cash: kindred.

The imagery opening and closing the video—choosing the freedom of the road, in red vintage—evokes Amelia Jackie’s own story of growing up in Georgia, Florida, and Maine, moving to New York in her teens, and traversing the states before making her home under the ash-hued skies of L.A. These landscapes infuse her sound—intimate vocals underpinned by steady, honeyed instrumentals, like a Billie Holiday-haunted, alt-pop Lucinda Williams for our time—that she honed playing guitar in the living rooms of friends, barns in Tennessee, and city bars and clubs. Velvet Leash is the first release off of her first full-length album, forthcoming in the new year, under her own name—a name that, like the bittersweet melody of Velvet Leash, is sure to stick in your mouth.
